We are fortunate! The University of Illinois at Chicago is one of only eight sites funded by several divisions within the National Institutes of Health to study racial disparities in health over the next five years. Our program, the UIC Center for Population Health and Health Disparities (CPPHD), receives support from the National Cancer Institute and has been in operation since the fall of 2003.

The issue of racial and ethnic disparities in access to, delivery of and benefits from health care is longstanding and complex. Initially, the Center is focusing on breast cancer, examining why mortality rates are so much higher in Hispanic and African-American women than in White women. This gap is persisting and continues to widen. Under the leadership of Richard Warnecke, Ph.D., a team of community-based partners are collaborating with the more than fifteen UIC faculty, staff, and students in this effort. Our Center joins the ever-growing voices of concern that are calling attention to these disparities and advocating for collaborative initiatives that will enhance understanding and the ultimate design of successful and sustainable interventions.
